Yes thank goodness everyone is ok. You have given me pause but I still think keeping my hitch lock will serve me better than unlocked. I won't use lock pins at the base plate so I can maintain a quick release if needed. Sounds like that would not have helped much if flames were keeping from getting near those connections.

My tow bar is locked at the receiver with a locking hitch pin.
The crossbar between the base plates is padlocked to the base plates.
The security cables are anchored to the base plates (per Roadmaster's owners manual) and clips onto the receiver.
The pins (not shown) are not padlocked to the base plates. I want the ability to drop the toad quickly, if needed.
My guess is that with the cables anchored at the toad it is safe to perform a disconnect in an emergency when done at the receiver.
I have extra
pins, extra
security cables, and a 2nd
tail light pigtail - all in case I suffer a 5-finger discount. These 3 items are not cheap. I'm more worried about another RVer shopping at my tow bar for replacement parts than I am about vandalism.
EVERY TIME I park the MH with car in tow I check all of the connections at the toad before getting in the MH to drive away - even if it is just to go inside the store to pay for fuel.
