I just had a B&W Patriot slider installed. Not to be paranoid, but I'm thinking about how all you got to do is pull 4 pins and it could be lifted out. Two questions, first, how many people use a locking pin similar to the bumper hitch to lock in their hitch? Second, on my hitch the head lifts off even easier, does anyone lock it t the main hitch when not towing?Thanks.

My hitch has the same lift off head. I have a cover over the bed, when not towing, so out of sight. It depends on the area your truck is parked, but a cable lock would help to deter theft.You see some hitch pics on here, with locks, but I don't remember anyone posting that their hitch has been stolen.Jerry

Mine is not a B&W but setup the same way. I have never locked it down in 12 years. We have traveled coast to coast and northern border areas to as far south as S.C.

I have a B&W Companion and I don't lock it down. It is under a cover when not hooked up so I'm not concerned.Several years ago I had a boat trailer hooked to my pickup and after a food stop I was checking everything before getting back on the road and I noticed the plastic cap on the surge brake reservoir was gone. Yes, it was there before the trip started because I always checked the brake fluid level before each trip. Someone lifted it. So my main concern when hooked up and away from my rig is who is doing what while I'm out of sight. So I always check everything prior to moving again since we never know who is doing what.Like a boss I used to have used to say "I trust everyone, but I always cut the cards".

I'd be more worried if I thought there was a market for "hot" 5th wheel hitch parts. :) "Psst, hey buddy, want to get a really good deal on a Companion 5th wheel hitch?" Seems like it would be a lot of work for minimal return.OTOH if it makes you feel better...

My back flip also covers my PullRite Super Glide hitch, rails in the bed, not under.

If you don't lock your arm, you better check it every time after you've stopped for lunch, or shopping.
A friend had his receiver hitch pin pulled at a boat ramp parking lot, and just noticed it before backing in to load his boat. There are some real low life people out there.

I do. I also have locking pin on my receiver hitch. :-)

Thanks for your thoughts. Being in construction for 35 years, you'd be surprised what people will steal for scrap, and a little deterrent goes a long way. Yes if they really want it, its gone.

I do agree that a padlock/locking pin through the arm on the Companion is a good idea. Just to keep someone from messing with the latch for the heck of it. If the rest of those locks make you feel better then by all means whatever it takes. But I'm less than convinced that 5th wheel hitch theft is a real threat.

I have at times locked my Patriot. I run a combination cable lock around the base. I then padlock the cable to the release locking arm and then padlock the cable to the front rail. Yes a semi serious thief could cut the cable. But I guess removing a portion of the probability is better than finding out someone stole the top part just for kicks.
But who would know that you can just pull up on the two handles and the top comes off? It would take a knowledgeable person to know. How common would that be?

Yep, that's what I meant about pranksters, just pulling the lever or pins. Yes, even a passer by thief, could steal the head off from any B&W quite easily. I think all Companion heads are interchangeable, as are the various Patriots, so thief just needs to purchase the base of choice. Many of the B&W bases are not very heavy either, if a thief has the time.

Learjet has his covered for the would be thieves, but yes, should have a padlock in the handle when hitched, for the not so funny pranksters.

As far as bstealing the hitch, unless the thiefs are nlooking for my Super Glide, I doubt they will randomly pick it! (one of the big dis advantages of owning a Super Glide is "it is to heavy")! I do put a padlock on the handle, not only for idiots who would pull it while parked in a rest area, but it would never bump out as I drive down the road with a padlock!
