I don't think the intent is not to use in the rain. I think the intent to avoid damage in heavy rain and wind. Common sense usually prevails here. But the manufacturers need to compensate for lack of common sense (I notice this more and more as I get older) and make sure consumers are aware that if your awning rips off due to heavy rain and/or wind, it's not really their fault. Frankly I don't blame them. Whether I was warned or not, I would retract my awning with the threat of either. Common sense. It's not a roof, it's a retractable awning.
