Do you know how to replace DP alternator & belt?

This past weekend our RV trip was cancelled when our serpentine belt snapped while driving. The alternator had seized, and the belt broke. This is my guess because the alternator pulley wheel is the only one I cannot turn by hand, and there was a built up of belt rubber on the pulley.

I am thinking about taking the alternator off myself, and having it sent in, to be rebuilt. And hoping there is enough space between the rear radiator fan and shroud for me to slip a new belt around? I do not want to take the radiator and fan off.

We have a 2008 Cummins ISC 360 engine with about 47,000 miles. Anyone think the above is easy enough to do oneself, advice, suggestions, comments?

With warm regards, James

Somewhere around the shroud there should be room to slip the belt in.
  • How is your access from the top from inside the closet, and from the bottom?

Below is the diagram of how the belt is routed at least on this ISC You will need a 1/2 inch socket wrench...

Here is a link that ought to help

  • Cummins 8.3L mechanical.

I have changed my alternator twice. The belt four times.

But.... I have a side radiator so have access to the belt and alternator from the rear.

The belt takes about 5 minutes and is just looping the belt around the pulleys with the tension pully held relaxed with a socket wrench. I always carry a spare belt.

The alternator will take @20 minutes to remove, once you identify the right sockets sizes. It requires the belt be removed and then two bolts as I recall. The wires will need removal also.

I found my Cummins engine manual to be quite helpful since it has pictures of all repair and replace procedures.
