We came from the boating world (C&C 34' sailboat) so we knew the RV lifestyle would work for us. Started out with a 34' Winne Vectra gasser. Great coach, but no slides and it felt cramped. We needed more room and I wanted a diesel so in 09 we upgraded to a 38' Travel Supreme with four slides. It has been just about a perfect rig and has everything we need, but I'm still thinking 42'-45' next time around. We recently built an RV garage and sized it for a 45' rig. We never boondock, Walmart or stay at state parks so for the most part the longer rig isn't an issue. To us it's always full hookups and if the campground doesn't have good cable and WiFi we consider that roughing it.
As pointed out above, it's all about how you plan on using the rig. Good luck.
