We looked high and low for a shorter DP from about 2003-2005. I asked many dealers why they didn't have many/any 36'-38' coaches in stock. The answer was always that they were not popular. In the same breath, they would acknowledge that the minute they got one in, it sold immediately. My feeling was that they make more money on the larger coaches. Often the same chassis and components, but they can charge a lot more for a few extra feet.
Buying your last coach first really only applies to those who will only be RVing for another 10-15 years. You're certainly not going to buy the last coach you'll ever own at 25 years old or even 35 years old with 3 kids.
I think you can research until you're blue in the face and not be able to select the perfect vehicle. It's very difficult to pick out a coach and not have a few things, after you've owned it for awhile, that you would change. Your needs also change with age. We didn't need a big comfy RV at 30 years old because we did most of our camping outside with the kids. Now in our late 50's, we want comfort and convenience.
X2 - There always seems to be something about every single MH we've ever looked at. And tastes and needs do change with age. Not to mention every time you turn around there is a new design breakthrough. So hard to pinpoint the exact unit and year when pulling the trigger. There is a certain point where needs, wants, taste and budget align close enough and concessions are minimal.
