We progressed from two person trail tent to 33' no slide, no levels gasser. We rented a 28' C for a week before making the leap. After 3 years (actually after two years we began shopping) we bought a 36' gasser that we kept for 8 years. Our longest trip was 9 months - close enough to full time as to not matter - we came "home" reluctantly. Took another year to sell the townhouse and most of its contents. I realized that we could not keep the 8 year old coach because the interior was shabby and worn out and the drive line had 110,000 miles on it with no major failures and lots of upkeep to keep it in top shape. No way I was going to drop big bucks to overhaul the interior on that chassis so we could full time.
We shopped a lot and ended up with our present Phaeton 36 QSH (see signature). WE find 36' to be just fine for the two of us and the occasional visiting grandchild. It's a good thing because I doubt I could stuff a larger coach into my son's driveway (1/8 mile twisting uphill to a platform about twice as long as the coach in both dimensions - it takes some patience to turn the coach 270 deg to fit on the platform).
The space loss from a 40' Phaeton with similar floor plan is in the bathroom and the bedroom. there is no room for a king bed, we have never had a king bed in our 50 years of marriage so no big deal. I would like another foot in the bathroom so I don't have to brace my head against the cabinet while brushing my teeth to avoid banging it :S. There is all the storage we could want and we can go anyplace we choose, including to our son in Virginia.
