There have been previous discussions on what to do with doghouses and most say re-carpet them. I think painting it could be an option after removing carpet adhesive and sanding and priming first. You may have more engine noise without the carpet though. One suggestion I read was that if you re-carpet find an experienced installer by calling around to carpet companies. Good luck!
