Domicile: Texas vs. Florida

We're looking at domicile options. Since we'll be full time RVing, but not retired, we want to eliminate the state income tax, so we're looking at options via Escapees. Texas and Florida seem to be the best choices, but I'm wondering if one is better than the other. Geography is not an issue.

  • Just one other twist to consider...A RV with Full sleep, kitchen & bath facilities qualifies as a 1st or 2nd home. As such, you can deduct the interest paid on the loan from u'r income tax. The only question that this causes is ... do you than have to pay Florida yearly Real Estate taxes on u'r 'Home'?
  • Florida has no special licenses or inspections. Florida is perhaps the only state left with nationwide health-insurance networks.

Escapees mail Florida forwarded to Texas is somewhat preposterous; you can have a mail box in Florida that is just as valid as Texas. It's legally a street address.

      Hey JBH,

So we are looking to hit the road again in our Motorhome,  so please, correct me if I'm wrong, we could get a PO Box in Forida and that would consitute a physical address in Fl?

      Thank you

Not sure if you were aware but this is a 7 yr old thread. But since the patriot act, you need a physical address to verify state of residency and usually a utility bill.

  • I believe Texas has a vehicle inspection program, so if you register there, likely the rv will need to be inspected shortly after the rv enters TX (a TX domiciles person could tell you more; we use FL)
What about health insurance? If you are buying individual policy consider FL, as it has policies on the exchange with nationwide provider network...at least this year...hopefully or many more.

2 other states that are real good is the state of Washington, and Nevada. Regards
  • Do you end up also registering your vehicles where you have your residence, and have your driver license from that state???

If so -- I believe Texas has a special license for the RV that is more complicated. In Florida (where I live) there is no special RV license.
When you register a vehicle for the first time in FL you have to have the VIN verified by the police. I had a palm beach county police person who lives in our community verify mine so I could register it.

RV license fees are reasonable. When you first register you will need some proof of taxes paid -- otherwise you might owe sales tax on the RV value.
Same for registering cars for the first time.

good luck -- let us know what you choose and how it goes.

  • FL is cheaper. Compare registration fees. I just paid over $500 to register by RV in TX. I believe it was less than $100 in FL.
  • I've heard (though I do not know the details) that SD is problematic because of health insurance issues.
  • South Dakota is another popular option without state income tax. Remember Texas has vehicle inspections that have to be performed often and I think can affect with registration process. Check out www.dakotapost.net for information about domicile in South Dakota.
