Sounds like a TriMark latch which is made of pot metal. Mine was cracked at the bottom where it connects to the inside of the door. Look carefully and let us know. The rest of the system was very strong on mine.
Open the inside door panel to access. I didn't want to remove the adjustable striker bolts as I didn't know what whould happen to the nuts.
