Door Location for DPs

Why do they almost always put the entry door of a DP in front of the passenger seat? I hate that. I like that my wife and I sit evenly across from each other when we travel. It also seems like it would be difficult to get the stairs out when on uneven ground.

There are lots and lots of DP users on this forum so I am sure they will tell me I am wrong and that OK but I hope they take time to explain why.
  • To maximize floor space. Not sure what you mean by the side by side thing. My wife sits across from me while driving. When we aren't we are on the couch together if we wish , or not. There are diesel pushers with mid doors if that's your preference.
  • We used to have a motorhome with the door about halfway down the coach. I used to hate it because there was this big hole where the stairs were and I had to manually had to put a cover over that hole. It did not have an electric slide like the diesel pushers do. It seemed that most of the time when you are parked at a resort you spend most of the time in the living room, and that is where the hole for the steps were. If you were not careful and you had not covered the stairwell, you could easily over look it and fall breaking a leg or something. That gasoline coach also had a door in front on the drivers side which I also hated because it was hard getting in and out. The dumbest design I ever saw on a motorhome. Front door passenger side is the only way to go.

But if that is what you like then there are some older coaches that have that center door. I believe Alpine, and I think I saw some Safari Motor coaches that had that side door.
  • The manufacturers put the door in front because that's what most buyers want. Back when our coach was built, they offered a mid-door in every floor plan, but I have only seen one coach like ours with a mid door. You also have more usable room in the coach with the door in front. You have to take at least two feet for the mid door, but only need to add a foot in front of the passenger for the door. DW and I both sit at the same level when we travel. We have never had a problem extending the stairs anywhere.

OP, while you sit next to each other, can you hear each other in your Holiday Rambler Admiral money pit? A front door is better use of the space than a mid door.
  • Our 01 Fleetwood Expedition is side by side seating with a front door entry. We actually have never found a need to add the step cover. I think that by searching a bit will yield you a suitable DP with what your looking for.
  • My Sahara has a mid entry door, however, this is a 20 year old bus. I haven't seen many mid-entry floor plans lately.

  • Don't think there is one answer on this one.
Our MH has a platform when the door is closed to close the stairs, my Angel sits right across from me on the same level as I do.
Too much stuff between the wheels?
Design is taken from a Bus?

Getting up and down the stairs is no worse than getting in and out of our 5th Wheel. The stairs in our Kountry Star were basically the same, it was a mid door model.
