Whoever told you that doesn't know what he or she is talking about; riding your brakes is a good way to get yourself killed.
Brake system warning light won't come on if the brakes are overheated. Don't wait for that to happen. It will only come on if the brake system looses hydraulic pressure ie: leak or low fluid level,and generally then only when the brake pedal is depressed...
