We have not downsized, so I can't answer that question directly. But, I will offer a few things to think about. How are you planning to use the unit? Weekend campouts several times a year at sites close to home? Driving the country to where life takes you, no matter how long away from home? The answers to these questions may help you decide on space and more importantly weight. Motorized RVs are limited by weight constraints, most newer Class C units use a Ford Chassis limited to 14500# total weight, i.e., the RV, you, and everything else. It doesn't matter if you have more space, but no more weight capacity. You shouldn't overload. So, come up with an idea of how much you're gonna carry weight-wise, and look for an RV chassis that will safely handle it.
Now, don't be fooled by some Class As. I've been in some at RV shows that would be immediately overloaded by just having our family of four adults on board with no stuff. Again, no matter the space.
For short camping trips without the need for lots of stuff, I think most Class Cs would work for you. If planning more extensive travels, the Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity (OCCC) becomes more of an issue.
Best wishes on your search. I apologize in advance if this is old news.
