driving uphill on gravel driveway

Soon I am going to visit my father-in-law who has a long uphill gravel drive way. Anyone have experience driving uphill on gravel? I have a 40' dutch star DP. I don't know the exact grade, I know an semi truck has made it up before.
  • If it is compacted gravel you should have no problem. If the gravel is fresh and deep, you may lose traction and have to make another attempt. On our steep driveway in Tennessee, it usually took awhile for the fresh gravel to get compacted enough provide a non-slip type roadway. Loose gravel is not your friend.
  • Be smooth on the accelerator and try to maintain momentum. If you feels tires slipping, stop...once you break loose odds are you'll just dig a hole.
  • Lock it in Low gear and march right up.

Should be easier than a car. More weight on the drive axle.
  • This should not be a problem, unless recent rains have made the ground softer than normal. If you had room to turn around a smaller RV before, I would not worry about it.

If covered with leaves, then you might have a slippage problem.

    Fred.
  • Just make sure you have a place to turn around at the top.
