Dull Headlights

I had the same issue. I polished the lenses using the SYLVANIA Headlight Restoration Kit.

Then I periodically use this on the lenses: Meguiar's G17110 Headlight Protectant.

I replaced the bubs with:
Philips 9006 X-treme Power Replacement Bulb, (Pack of 2)

I did this 1-1/2 years ago and the lenses are still clear and bright.

Found replacement assemblies on Amazon for our 2002 Itasca 32V. Put the DOT number from the original, clouded over lenses into the search, found they were from Ford Aerostar van. Cost me 60.00 for two assemblies. Took it to a Ford dealer after I installed them and they aimed them when they did our oil change.

I'm a firm believer in the "Daniel Stern" fix recommended by DSDP Don. Many coach builders use "off the shelf" chassis and the wiring is inadequate. On my previous coach, a '97 HR endeavor, there were at least a couple of extra feet of wiring for the headlights to allow the coach builder some flexibility in the headlight placement. This extra wiring and its small gage caused the voltage at the headlights to be at least a volt below the battery voltage, causing the lights to be dim. You have to measure the headlight voltage at the connector at the back of the light with the headlight connected and on. You may have to insert a small wire into the connector to be able to contact it with a voltmeter. As I remember, you can get a kit from Stern, or, if you are handy, you can buy the parts at your local auto parts store.

I don't remember how I found the right ones. But you can call Fleetwood parts and ask them if your headlights have the same part number as mine. They won't tell you the Ford part number but they should be kind enough to tell you if they are the same. If that fails Amazon will accept returns especially if they don't fit. The price is so reasonable and they are so bright it is sure worth it. The mounting frame that FW fabricated leaves a lot to be desired and you'll probably have to get creative to get them to adjust up. What I did was park the Jeep and MH side by side about 30 yds from a wall and made the adjustment on the MH.
You will not regret getting this done they are so good I didn't bother putting in the silverstar ultra bulbs in.

"roadrat57".....There are several things that can be going on with your lights....

First, if your lenses are dull, you can polish them or replace them. If you look closely at your headlights, there is a number embossed on them. Google that number and it should bring up the correct lenses in a search. As stated, they are usually off of some American automobile like a Ford or GM. Usually, new lenses are about $100.00 each.

Second, there is a phenomena that occurs when driving a Class A. In your car, you're sitting behind the headlights, looking out over them. In a motor home, you're sitting well above them and looking down at an angle. This will make them not appear as bright.

Third, some manufacturers used undersized wiring and the headlights will not be getting a full 12 volts. This can be fixed with relays. There is an excellent article about headlights, written by Daniel Stern

Sometimes the cheapest fix can be to add some driving lights. On my previous coach, I added some Hella FF75 driving lights and they worked great for illuminating the road so that I wasn't over driving my lights. They were low and didn't blind oncoming traffic.

We have the same NHTSA headlights, I think that are also used on Freightliner truck.
It is terrible driving at night. We have had to stop and use a flashlight to read road signs. I have to get out and direct her to park at night, the lights re so bad.
It is a common problem, I'm having heavier wiring run and a relay installed before next time out. The driving lights are large but no better than a kerosene lamp. Maybe we can find better units that will fit. I can see no solution to replacing the head light assembly, as they are peculiar in style and nothing else will fit. The problem is the little reflector inside, to prevent direct light out the front. All you get is reflected, poorly diffused light out the lens. If I had the money, I would have the cap redone with holes to fit old round four light setup. That would give excellent light, I thing, better than our little AMG perhaps. s it is now 50 ft down the road is about it, and forget reading signs or seeing someone cross the road.

Not an A but same scary situation at night with a C. I took it right in to replace the headlights when I got back. Only thing? They can't replace just the headlight. I had to buy the whole assembly! Cost me 500 bucks for both lights. :R But it was well worth it.

On another note I added fog lights to my conversion van I used to travel long distances with and WHAT A DIFFERENCE driving at night and/or rainy situations. It was like driving in broad daylight and the width of vision is priceless when traveling on narrow roads.

Looks like those are for Ford Expedition. Will they fit a 2008 Fleetwood 31lx Fiesta with Ford chassis?

my 2007 Fleetwood bounder were the same way found they were headlight assambalys from 2004 ford expedsion cost 80 dollars for both new on amazon what a difference
