Easement Clearance Issues.

Hello,

New to the these forums. They were recommended from others I belong to (MDShooters.com). I have done a search but I'm not coming up with anything.

My question is in regards to a clearance issue I have with an easement on our property. We tried to get a Class C Thor Four Winds 31E down it and the house battery box (tray) and/or Generator exhaust is dragging. The easement is a down grade slope of ~10 degrees (Sorry, I haven't taken exact measurements). Given the breakover angle of the unit it shouldn't be a problem but is. The bottom the battery box have, what appear to be, fins coming down. I would assume for heat dissipation. The exhaust come down ~3 or 4 inches then is bent leading to a bracket hanger again ~3 or 4 inches from the bottom side of the unit.

My solution would be to build some ramps to increase the ground clearance thereby increasing the breakover angle of the unit. The ramps would be made from pressure treated 2x10's. I would cut a 45 degree angle on the face of each "step" to allow the wheel to roll better. I believe I only need ~2 steps to clear the top of the hill. I would get the front tires started down and put the ramps at the back tires to allow the unit to clear. Then then same coming back up the hill.

If anyone has a better option please let me know.
  • All,

Thank you for the responses. I know that reshaping the easement is the best option but it is not something I could do. The impact points on the RV are on the main town road. I have asked the town but they will not allow me to modify it. I don't have a post-able pic of it either. I wish I could.

x2. If at all possible. Lugging boards, backing up, lugging boards. Pull in, go in the house, relax.

I know some people have added helper air bags with an air compressor on the rear suspensions of their gas coaches that have low clearance for use exclusively on entering and exiting steep driveways. The advantage of the helper air bag solution is it works everywhere, getting in and out of gas stations, campgrounds, etc. Flip the in cab switch give the compressor a few seconds to pump up the air bags, drive over the hump, flip with switch off, which turns off the compressor and opens a solenoid valve to drain the air bags and be on your way.

I did this on our 31' four winds, it gave me 3/4" at the rear bumper. Spent about 400. In my opinion not worth the $$. I would try the boards first.

  • Get a 4WD conversion done, that will raise your ride height.
  • I don't see anything wrong with your approach. Many RVers use boards to help with clearance situation. Go slow and experiment.
