Electri step road noise

I am really new to rv's.

We just bought a one owner extremely well maintained 1998 Triple E Commander 32' on a P30 chassis.

On rough roads or streets we hear steel noise and found out after careful examination that all that noise comes from exactly one place..the electric step. When folded under the rv it makes loud steel noise everytime we hit a bump on the road.

Any clues how to prevent all that rattling noise? Apart from that the step works perfectly.

Thanks in advance

  • There are 4 bolts that hold the entire step assembly to the MH. Did you try pushing up and down on the step assembly from the bottom step? You might need to use a jack and lift it lightly up, or try extending the steps and pulling up and down on the bottom step. By extending the steps it should give you enough leverage to move the steps to see what is loose.
  • Is it possible to attach a tension spring that would keep pressure on the piece that rattles, and stay in place when extending and retracting?
BTW, keep hands and arms clear of that step unless the power is disconnected while working on it.
  • You can buy carpet step covers at Walmart or any RV supply store.
    That should solve the problem.
  • I had the same problem, I cut a few pieces of rubber mat & tie wrap them in between the step.
  • If they are Kwikee Steps by Power Gear you might want to contact them and ask.
    Here is a link.....Kwikee Step

    Good luck
  • Thanks. But my step is making noise like 2 shovels hitting each other.

We attached it with bungee cords and a piece of foam between the step and the chassis and now no noise. But such a setup kinds of make the step unusable.

  • Hi C350amg and welcome to the forum.
You must have some rough roads back east, as I have had several motor homes with electric steps and have not heard them rattle when we hit a hole.
But having said that we do have lots of noise and rattles from lots of places. The dash, the cupboards and who knows where else.
We are driving a 1998 Southwind with a tag axle. Class A will have some noise and rattles on rough roads.
