electric step

We have a 2001 Winnebago brave. The electric steps are working except for one thing. They are supposed to retract when the engine is started with the door closed (no matter which position the switch is in) they always did until this spring. They no longer do that so I have to make sure they are retracted before driving off. It is not a problem as long as I remember to put the switch in the retracted position but it is easy to forget so I would like to have them working like they are supposed to. I don't know what to check, any ideas or knowledge with this problem would be appreciated.
P.S. Fortunately, they always go out when the door is opened no matter where the switch is positioned.
  • Sounds like you have lost the electrical signal from the ignition switch to the step controller. Could be a fuse or bad connection.
  • Mine started not wanting to go in especially after being out for a week or so. I always have kept it lubricated with silicone but still continued to have problems. I pulled the motor off and checked the brushes, cleaned the housing and motor with CRC electric cleaner. I opened the gears up and found the three plastic bushings had worn oblong. I purchased a new package of the plastic bushings and put them in. Problem solved for me. Mine motor was a Coach Step so yours may be slightly different.
  • The test procedures for proper operation of a KwiKee step are on pages 10 and 11 of KwiKee Owners Manual #888. If you don't have the manual, Chris Bryant has it on his website. He is moving right now but I think the site is still up.

If you want a copy of #888, you can find it and download it from several places on line, failing at that, PM me and I'll look it up in my files and send a PDF to your Email. That could take a couple days however.
  • Mine operates off of a magnet. One on the door and one on the frame. Once I knocked the one off of the frame and the steps would not come in. Put on another magnet and they worked fine.
  • Thank you for your suggestions. I will try and find the owners manual suggested.
