Electrical

I just bought a 1999 KS 192 Coach House Class B....
Everything worked on my way home but I attempted to plug into my house with an adaptor and quickly popped the GFI on my house receptacle...
After that, my 120 vote plug ins only had partial power when I went to a campsite.
I do not know where the fuses or breakers are located and wondering if it was just the GFI plugs or can you not plug your van up to household current...
  • GFI/GFCI are the same thing, and as another poster said, will not pop because of an overload. If the GFCI popped it could be a bad outlet, or GFI. GFI's are there to protect you from being electrocuted, so if you have one popping find out why, and get it fixed.
  • You should be able to plug into a standard house GFCI with no problems. The fact that it tripped indicates there is a ground fault somewhere in your RV. It needs to be fixed. Don't let someone tell you that you overloaded the circuit. GFCI outlets don't trip on overload, they trip on a ground fault.
Can you plug other things into your home's outlet and power them? If not you may have a defective GFCI outlet at your house. They do go bad.
  • You probably also have a GFCI in the RV that needs reset.
Find your breakers. Turn them all off before you plug in.
Plug in and starting with the main, turn on the breakers one at a time.
    Post the results.
  • I only have a conversion van, but the electrical setup is located on the inside on the wall closest to the plug on the outside. I have a couple rockers to turn on two sets out outlets, one to the overhead heater/AC, one for everything else. Next to this is a panel held on by screws, the fuses are in there. Next to this is another panel where I can plug in extension cords and that has a GFI reset button. Look at the outside plug and see what it is rated for. 120V, 15 amp? Normally can hook up to household current. But I have problem with typical household because there may be other devices working on that line which may add up to more than 15 amp and blow the circuit. I would suggest you find an RV center and ask them to show you where everything is, to check the circuits. My conversion van came with no manuals at all.
  • On mine they are located on the passenger side in the back on the lower wall. Might have to use a screwdriver and turn the square black latch one quarter of a turn either way to open the cover. Make sure the van is NOT plugged into electrical outlet before you start poking your fingers in there.
