Engine Alternator/Voltage regulator charging problem
Have a 1994 Fleetwood Southwind 35' Class A Diesel.
Up until couple weeks ago the voltage meter remained at a steady ~14 volts. Suddenly noticed that it was pegged, 18+ volts. Not sure how long it was this way but long enough to fry the battery, as it was an older one. The battery was pretty warm.
While driving down road turned on everything I could to help draw more power, i.e. lights, heater fan, etc.
Had two people look at it when was in Arizona/New Mexico. One (young kid at a truck stop) said it was the battery. He thought that once replaced it would fix the problem, this didn't work.
Second was an RV repair guy ran into at Walmart, of all places. He did a quick check and confirmed what I thought saying it was the voltage regulator.
Today the voltage meter showed that the behavior was erratic, in that most of the time didn't show any charge happening, while sometimes it was.
Have delayed posting and asking, but am looking to identify what is the best way to identify the problem. From what can tell the voltage regulator isn't on the alternator (would assume it's a box of some sort on the outside, which don't see). Haven't looked at the schematics yet (which have).
Have a spare/old alternator, and the tag attached to it is labeled as 160 amp with number 1117899R.
EDIT: Was 160 amp for alternator, not 100
