This is what I was thinking.
The travel lanes stay relatively clean due to the amount traffic using them. Therefore, the left side (if you are a right lane traveler) would not see as much dirt.
All that dirt has to go some where. That right shoulder gets pretty dirty. Maybe, just maybe.....you ride that right lane, give a wide birth to traffic passing you---wander a bit, etc... (scoot over into the dirt).
HOWEVER....black SOOT is not DIRT. I'd be looking on that side of the coach and engine compartment as well. Like others have said: An oil soot may be coming from the crankcase breather or even diesel blow-by from the turbo.
SORRY...I think it is technically a blow-OFF valve, not a blow-BY valve. Blow-off & blow-by mean two different things to the die-hard diesel crowd.
