I have a Discovery, 2005. On long pulls it would heat up, I managed the heat by dropping down to lower gears as necessary. Once I wasn't paying attention, driving in cruise and going from Canon City, Colorado to Howard, when I noticed that my temps were way beyond normal! I immediately dropped out of cruise and geared down. Temps still went up and all kinds of lights flashed. With nowhere to pull off I continued in 1st and finally the temps came down and all lights went out!.
Yesterday we were traveling on 160 west of La Vete CO., when my temps began to rise as we were pulling up to La Veta Pass, gearing down did not help, a low coolant light came on and then engine protection light! I pullover and shut down. Call GS Roadside and even though I was in the middle of nowhere , they found a mobile service 60 miles away. I had lost most of my coolant! Upper radiator hose had come off. Clamp ring was still on it. Replaced that and 7 gallons of coolant later I was on my way.
I had service done earlier in the spring and assumed they checked the levels. I suspect that I had low fluid for a period of time. So make sure your fluid level is full! My surge tank is located under a shroud and is not visible without pulling the shroud down. I now know where it is and can check it from time to time.
