UPDATE
Took the coach into the shop. The guy ran diagnostics, couldn't find anything wrong, so he suggested to....surprise!....steam clean the radiator.
Yeah, yeah...I know. But, even if I had cleaned it myself, I wouldn't have been assured that I had really solved the problem. And we were heading into a desolate area, up into the mountains, and I just didn't want to have more problems, and have to call for service, etc. So, I 'spect it was worth the cost. The guy also came with me on a 40-minute check ride with his computer plugged into the data port. Said he was reviewing 5-7 pages worth of statistics, and all seemed fine.
After that service, as we headed off up into the mountains towing our car, the gauge did get very close to the red, but did not go up into the red, which was an improvement.
Just now I called HR Tech Support and here's what I was told:
1. It's okay to go into the red for a few minutes, while climbing a mountain, but it should come out of the red after leveling off.
2. Keep the RPM's in the 2,000-2,200 range by downshifting (the down arrow on the trans control panel). Like downshifting on a bike, it makes it easier to climb, and the engine produces less heat.
3. To clean the radiator, spray Simple Green on the inside of the radiator as best I can, let it sit for 15 minutes, then spray it off from the outside, being careful not to damage the radiator fins.
So, even though the service guy cleaned it from the outside when I had it looked at, I'm going to Simple Green it from the inside and rinse it from the outside, just so I know I've done everything I can. Then, Saturday, we begin the next leg of our journey....over some 12,000 foot mountains. If I'm not back in a week, send someone in for me....
