There are several things that can cause the temperature to climb. One is a dirty CAC plugged up with oil and dirt. And yes Cummins engines did have breather tubes just like Cat engines. If not redirected away from the radiator it would clog up the CAC. Simple green will do the job cleaning it. But there are other things that can cause the problem you have like a bad thermostat in the radiator. Fan belts worn out and slipping.
You mentioned that the oil gauge did not go up with the high temperature, and the reason behind that is that the oil gauge measures in pressure not heat.
