Yes, the pully is behind the fan. Thought that if you were turning the fan, that the clutch could have been creating the heating problem.
It isn't too hard to remove the alternator for bench testing.
On the generator, are your trying to start from the genset or the remote?
If from the remote, try disconnecting the cable, then try from genset. Check the small control fuse on the genset next to the start switch.
