Engine skip/knock

In June 2013 on the way to Alaska our engine begin to skip/knock when going up hills. After several experiences of the knocking the check engine light came on. It had also been raining heavy all day. We were in Mitchell, SD and took the motorhome to A-1 transmission. They checked the codes and replaced the mass air sensor, air filter, and knock sensors ($900.00). They said the air filter was wet. After the repairs the motorhome has ran good until yesterday. While traveling through western SD and MT in a heavy rain the motor begin to skip/knock and the check engine light came on as it did in 2013. Today we drove to Great Falls, MT with very little light rain and had no problems. Would a wet air filter cause this problem and ruin the sensors? Any ideas what we should do? Thanks for all your responses. John
  • If the air filter inlet horn is facing forward behind the grill, give it a half turn to protect it from direct entry of rain.
  • Plug wires/secondary ignition problems first show up in dampness/high humidity.
  • The Chevrolet 8.1 engine in the Workhorse chassis had a known problem on some models with ingesting water. The air cleaner is located in the passenger wheel well and gets wet in rainy conditions. You need to better shield the air cleaner from water, yet still allow it to breathe.
  • Sorry, I forgot to say we have a 2004 Country Star with Chevy workhorse engine. thanks, John
  • Yes it can to answer your question. You need to build something to block the water from your air intake.
  • I bet that you have a early Ford V-10. I had a 1999 that sucked up all the water off the road. You need to change your air intake system, so that it is protected from the rain. If that is the case all you needed was an air filter and the mass air sensor cleaned. I always carried a spare air filter.
  • Sure sounds like its the problem, but really must know year, manufacturer & model engine. Gas or diesel?
  • That is a known issue and a fix available from Ford. The air intake allows water to get into the air filter. It gets wet, collapses and causes exactly what you are describing. Too bad. Looks like you might have spent quite a bit of money for no real good reason.

Check with your Ford dealer, or maybe someone in this forum can direct you.
