engine won't turn over

2001 Damon Ultrasport, cummins 275 hp motor on a freightliner chassis. I just installed the 2 chassis batteries after charging them up and it won't turn over, nothing. I get all the lights on the dash and after they all go out, the "low Air pressure" stays lit. There isn't any air pressure at all. The manual trouble shooting to add air from an outside source but it fails to explain how to do it. Bare with me, I'm fairly new to this class A.

Most often when you hear someone has removed their batteries and changed them out and now nothing works ends up being the replacement batteries are not connected correctly.

Sometimes pictures don't help when the newer batteries have their terminals in different locations on the battery box. Always best to observe the words NEG and POS or + and - stamped on the battery case to determine where they go. It gets even more fun when the batteries are 6VDC batteries...

You may need to fill the air tank? - should be a location with a quick disconnect in the basement area - make up a connection to charge it with a compressor?

This needs air to start is different?

    ?
  • Low air pressure has nothing to do with the starting. The air pressure wiil build up as the engine runs.
Check your battery connections. A diesel takes a lot of power to start, all connections must be clean and tight. Then check any lock-outs.
This might sound insulting but it's not meant to be, is the transmission in park and are you stepping on the brake pedal?
  • If it was ok before you changed the batteries it should be a wire not connected or one connected to a wrong terminal. Possibly shorted and blew a fuse somewhere!

Sounds like the connection - clean and reconnect when you check the batteries to be sure they are charged fully.

    new batteries ?
    when did it last start?

My guess is bad connection or bad batteries.

Let us know how it goes.

    BOL,
  • Took pics before disconnecting and everything is where it should be. Slides are both in.
  • Look around where you did the battery work. Look for a cable that may have been dropped.
  • There are a few interlocks that may prevent your engine from starting, like slides out, etc. EVery coach is different but you may go through a check list to make sure that EVERYTHING is in the starting position.
