exhaust extension small crack repair

Well, I decided to just take off the section and have it welded. It only took a few minutes to do. I don't know how it got a slit in it. Rest of piece was fine. re-installed and tightened clamp. Thanks for all the good remedies. This site has helped greatly with repairs and DIY repairs!

Two methods.

1: Muffler repair compond/tape.. I do not like this stuff, but it does work.. For a while.

2: Cut a section of pipe and splice in a new length, Many auto parts stores sell pre-cut, pre-sweged, pipes that will simply slip over the existing pipe.

Like others I'd like to know why it's cracked,, Odds are if it's cracked you need to replace the entire pipe.

I wish I had a pictuer. I think it might be a slit built into the exaust pipe. They do this so you can slide one over the outher. You may be able to loosen the clamp and reposition the slot so it dosen't show.

You can take some muffler repair goop and coat it with that first, and then put the clamp over it.

Quite likely it will be easier/less expensive in the long run to just replace that short piece with a new one. Exhaust pipes are in a harsh environment and one that has failed is often too thin to successfully weld.

I agree with the "tone and timber" of the last 3 posts: JBWeld won't work and it's an incredibly simple repair with a simple cracker-box welder.

More to the point: why bother? At the location you indicate, it's not a noise/safety/even cosmetic issue...

Why on earth would you not simply take it to a welder and have it welded shut? Shouldn't cost much to do or take more than a minute or two to fix, and will have no problems with either heat or vibration. If you go slathering epoxy or JB Weld or any other of the auto parts store exhaust system goos on it, you will have to repair it again fairly soon. None of them hold up long.

I'm wondering, what caused the "slit" in the first place? A possible defect in the pipe that was installed after the muffler? Does it look like damage of some sort or something that else? Anyway, a picture would be nice if you could, if not, not the end of the world. But, depending on what the circumstances are, why it happened, is it traveling? Getting larger? etc. I'd weld it. Yeah, it would take you a bit of time to disconnect the negatives of the batteries in prep but, that's a permanent fix for it. You're guaranteed that it will not get any worse and, in fact, will be repaired.

There are possible epoxies out there that might withstand the heat and sever vibration and, maybe it's worth an experiment or two. Good luck.
