We're not exactly made of money either, but we're already campers as reenactors and that's a mighty expensive hobby! So getting an RV wasn't such a stretch.
We bought a new class c last year because we intended to USE it. We love camping, or rather RVing, so we go as many weekends as we can.
First off, we're able to take a tax deduction on the mh's mortgage just as we did for the s&b house. A repair job was covered by our insurance and a warranty.
We have a Thousand Trails membership and it's been great for us as we have a couple nice cg's nearby. But you do want to have some nice TT cg's nearby like we do and use them for enough nights to make membership worth your money.
Gas is what it is...if that's really an issue, well...As for food, we just take along stuff we pretty much have on hand, including snacks and alcohol. We are not yet towing the car, so it's just easier to stay in camp and eat...and cheaper and less trouble!
Really if you're going to invest in this big toy, you want to be using it as much as you can...ask yourself if this something you really want to get into, what sort of travelling do you do and if an RV would make it better, examine your choices of type of RV. The more positve reasons you come up with for owning one, the better choice you'll make and the happier you'll be.
And making the right choice won't seem so expensive...at least the money spent will be well worth it:-)
