Any regrets ? If you would have to do it again would you ?

Imho, travelling always cost an arm and a leg compare to staying home, however some way to travel cost more than others, but some add a fun factor not included in some other, but for some its to discover a new hotel room every night, for others its a campground or ....

I have no other choice than trying it, am i going to like it a lot? I beleive so, if not then.....a few thousand down the drain and life goes on ( i prefer the idea that i we will like it, i dont have thousands to waste for fun )... ;-)

We will rent for a week, then we will have a good idea , thanks to all for your input guys !

If you are young and enjoy "roughing it" without private toilet and shower, running water,water heater, cook top and oven, electric lights, air conditioning, furnace, microwave and propane/electric fridge and some protection from human and animal predators and insects, tent camping using Coleman stuff can be charming and very inexpensive. It's nice to have started out that way to fully appreciate the amenities of a motorhome. We had a lot of young family fun camping and touring with our versatile 72 Dodge bubble top Family Wagon van camper conversion with only basic amenities, a step up from tent camping.

I think the motorhome incurs significant extra costs for tires and insurance over the trailer, assuming you have a truck and use it for things other than pulling the trailer.

It may well be that motels and restaurants would cost less than the RV. People who think the RV is worth more like being in places where there are no motels and sleeping in their own beds. A real interest in the RV and finding pleasure in maintaining it makes a huge difference to the costs and satisfaction.

We did a 2.5 month long trip last fall and spent just under $6,000. We didn't really eat out but once or twice, we boondocked mostly, and we didn't use it as a basecamp. We would pick a route with things we wanted to see and do them...when we were done for the day, we found a place to park it to overnight or researched a head of time.

NY to Colorado (stopped for one night), Utah to nv, to AZ, NM and home. The most we stayed in one place was maybe 4 nights except for visit to son's Las Vegas parking pad (in and out a few times for long weekends as they work).

I think that is pretty frugal given what we did. We are not sit on your bum kind of people.

Joe, ill definitly look for a used rv, its against my religion to loose that amount of money in depreciation, there must be deal somewhere !

Do you have to be rich to own and to use a Class C ?

You'll need a minimum of about $10,000 to buy one that is in a useable state.

About 5 years ago we paid $7500 for our 1990 Winnebago Warrior. Right off the bat we had to put $500 into the generator, $1000 into tires, and $500 into the cab air conditioner.

It also had leaks in the roof, and has a mold problem which doesn't bother anyone in the family except me unless I take Allegra, then I have no problems. :)

The leaks had damaged the shower walls, so I ripped out the shower and rebuilt it. Probably another $500.

I've put a few hundred into a blown heater core, and $500 into replacing a water pump.

We probably would have been better off buying a $10K RV, but we didn't have 10K, so it is what it is.

Class C RVs get 8-9 MPG. It costs me $90 a month to store it, then there is insurance and roadside assistance. I use it about one weekend a month on a 2-hour trip. 142 miles one way, or 280 round trip. At $3.50 per gallon, that's $108 per month. Camp sights are about $20 a night, or $40 a month. Typically when I or the family go camping we make a special grocery store run for sodas and snacks and goodies for the trip and that's easily another $100.

So you are looking at a bare minimum of $300 a month, or $3600 a year just for simple weekend excursions once a month. That's more than my car payment each month.

So. If you are going to go camping in an RV once a month plan on spending $350 a month to do it. Even in the months you don't use it, it's probably going to cost you $150 a month just sitting in storage.

If you can't afford that, it's too "rich" for you. :)
