We bought our coach new and was offered an extended bumper to bumper policy for $8,500. I knew it would be negotiable if I wanted it but I wanted to look at the brochure first. We took it home and I was astounded at what it DID NOT cover. So, we declined.
I think out of pure luck our out of pocket costs have been minimal. There really is very little that would have been paid by an extended policy. Even if I had bought the 'bumper to bumper' policy for $4,500, that's a lot of repair money.
Also, I'm not a big fan of waiting for people to decide my fate (insurance companies).... my patience is low in that regard. In our case, the extended contract company would have made a nice dime on us. It is worth it for some people to have the level of comfort with an extended policy. You have to pick your comfort level.
I don't think I've ever bought an extended policy on anything. My American Express card offers extended coverage for free when you charge an item that has a warranty. I actually used it when a flat screen TV went out that I bought from Best Buy. American Express credited me the whole price of the TV on my credit card (remote control sensor went out and would not operate the TV, the TV itself still works). The regular warranty was out over a year.
