Extended Warranty

I know that extended warranties have been discussed many times on these forums. Our old warranty that was purchased when the MH was new has just expired after seven years. I feel that we did get most of the money we paid up front at time of purchase out of the e oplan as it covered repairs on items in the RV.

I have an eight year old MH with about 17K miles in excellent shape for its age. I am considering finding a new plan for the next few years just for the peace of mind knowing that we are covered in case of a major problem with the coach. I think I have found an excellent company with a reasonable premium and a low deductible. They even give senior citizens a break on certain items.

I would be open to hearing from others that have had to make the same decision after the original warranty expired. Thanks in advance.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...... The decision on whether or not to purchase an EW, is highly personal. First, you should ask yourself the following question:

If I have a major failure, will it impact me financially, to the point where my coach will sit in my driveway, un-usable? Paying on a loan for an un-usable coach would be even worse!

Then it becomes a question of personal risk tolerance. Educate yourself on EW's and know that the odds are against you collecting what you put in. Also note that there are different levels of coverage. Our EW expires in September and IF I renew, it'll probably be for drivetrain only coverage. A $15,000 engine failure would cause me some pain. A $1500 refrigerator, not so much.

    It's your decision!

My sentiments exactly, Paul...perhaps we could make this into a sticky for when this question comes up....:B:B....Dennis

  • I look at it like this.

    Warranties are really "insurance policies".

I'm a bit of a risk taker for a reason. Warranty companies (like insurance) make money. They have to pay for buildings, employees, record keeping, computers, pencils, phone, A/C & heat bills... etc. In other words they may WAY more money than they pay out.

So basically if you consider all that overhead people have to be PAYING IN way more than they are paying out.

So I'd take any premium/payment that you are considering buying a warranty with, and stick it on the side for a rainy day WHEN something breaks. This includes house and truck.

Sure there are exceptions to this rule, but in general, I don't find warranties worth it.

    Just my opinion.
  • x2 on Wholesale Warranties in San Diego. Best prices and best options.
  • After 7 years on the first warranty which worked out well I am in the same boat. I went back to the dealer for a quote and was not pleased with the response. Someone on this forum recommended Wholesale Warranties.com in San Diego. Out of three I contacted they look to be the best and have many satisfied customers. I was looking for something to cover the Kodiak truck part of the rig but for another $1,000 the home parts are included for the next 4 years. Nothing is cheap to replace on a Class 5 diesel truck so this will work out fine. From past experience with the first extended warranty I prefer to have things taken care of prior to the need in E. Overshoe, Wy. Look up the number on their site and ask for David.
