F53 chassis extended warranty

DW and I just purchased a gently used (only 4000 miles) 2012 Tiffin Allegro on F53 chassis. I am considering buying an extended warranty from Ford on chassis / running gear. Cost is about $3200 for 3 1/2 years of coverage. Does anyone have fairly recent experience with the F53 chassis (good or otherwise) and/or the service through Ford warranty.

Thanks in advance.

  • We bought a 5yr/60k mile "service contract" on the Bounder just before the original 3/36 powertrain warranty from Ford expired.

Never had to use it for the powertrain. That 2nd generation 310hp V-10 has been flawless in 36K plus miles, and I just had it checked by a mechanic friend using his scan tool during a 40 mile trip back to the house, and every parameter was well within norms.

As for the service contract, it did replace the cooling coil on the fridge, one of the leveling jacks, a roof air and the AC/DC Converter. About $3500 worth of repair bills for the initial contract cost of $1500, and about $600 in deductibles.

Service contract expired in early 2013, and all the quotes for an annual contract were around $1200, so for the past 2+ years I've been saving my money and covering repair cost out of pocket.

To date have only had a main slide gear fail, which cost $750 to repair, but I know as the Bounder gets older, more things will break, and I just have to reason with myself over $1200+ annual cost of a service contract, or keeping that $1200 and covering repairs out of pocket.

I'm sure a major system failure/$4-5K repair will have me second guessing myself.
  • 2006 F-53 chassis, 3.5 years old, 17,800 miles, 6 months out of warranty, bought new. Always serviced on or ahead of schedule. Engine started knocking. Towed to Ford dealership. Told that we needed a new engine. $12K plus and we were back on the road.

Prior to our engine failure I looked into extended warranty plans but decided that I had time to decide as our coach was still fairly new.

My experience is not the norm for the V-10 engine. That said I wish that I had decided to buy an extended warranty before our trip.
  • I just traded my southwind on f53 chassis had 10 years and 82000 . ran perfect the hole time.
  • 9 years and 45,000 miles and only one minor repair I fixed myself in the driveway. As posted a contingency repair fund is a much better use of funds. The stuff above the chassis frame will be more of a problem than the stuff below.
  • I'm not sure you need any more warranty than the manufacturer already offers. Here's a statement from the 2013 Brochure. I believe the 2012 model is the same.

The Ford Motorhome Chassis has a Bumper-to-Bumper limited
warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles and a Powertrain
limited warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever
    occurs first.
  • We took out a 5 year 65,000 mile extended warranty plan when we bought our 2000 coach. Of course back then the cost was only $1,500.00. Ford had a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty on the chassis & drive train. Fortunately we never had to use either warranty.

Personally I would suggest setting up contingency repair fund usig a savings account where your money earns some interest thought it be ever so slight.

Good luck with your decision and safe travels....:)
  • Now.... a good service plan for the coach, like the Good Same plan... might be worth considering. If anything goes wrong, chances are it'll be with the coach
  • X2 - Not much to go wrong with on the chassis. If it were a 10-year / 300,000 mile plan for that price, I might consider it. Maybe. FWIW - $3200 will buy a full reman motor. Or a new transmission. Or a new rear axle.

That chassis is bullet proof. Save your money.
