My trips are weekenders, so I like filling up at home. I know what that water tastes like and where it's been!
On the road it becomes an adventure . . . or hassle, to fill fresh water. Finding the right facility, having that lane open, waiting in line, checking tank level, etc.
How CLEAN is that dump station? I stopped at an interstate rest area and it was filthy. I didn't want to touch anything or even step near the well. I kept going (and I have very low standards).
I'll "pre-load" my black tank, maybe 1/4, to keep things sloshing around. If I actually fill that tank I have bigger problems. Most trips I'll use event site porta-johns so I don't need dump when I get home.
If I do have to dump there's an RV shop that will let me dump for free but they always have to move some MH's around to get to it. It's a hassle, so I use a nearby state park. For a $5 day use fee you have access to the parks amenities, including the dump station.
But if I was doing long trips I'd definitely use the Pilot / Flyin J (or other) truck stops. Use a smart phone to locate and verify facilities - not all of them have dump stations.
