Filling Up A Gasser/Pump Limits

I know I'm probably opening myself up to a bunch of snarky comments, but I believe the only stupid question is the one that doesn't get asked, so here goes...
When I had my DP I could fill up my tank with no pump limit. I could pump $400-$500 in diesel just by swiping my card.
With my gasser, even at Pilot/FlyingJ RV lanes, the pump shuts off at $75.00, which is around 20 gl. I suppose I could reswipe my card 3 more times to fill my 80 gl tank, but that doesn't seem right.
Is this what everyone else does? Or do you go inside and tell them to override the pump limit?
  • another reason I don't own a MH. I own a TT with a truck with a 35 gallon tank and never had this problem you are experiencing.
  • I usually fill up at Costco with my gasser. They have a $150 limit. When I do have to pump twice I just re-swipe the card and start over again.

Most of the time no one is behind me as they see it is an RV.

Again, the bank does not set the limit. Visa, MC, Dscvr, AMex,etc does not care for this. Complaining to them will do nothing. The merchant sets the threshold.
  • We generally travel 300-350 miles per day. So I fill up early each day. Most often this requires only one swipe of the card. I should also mention I use gas cards like Conoco-Phillips, Shell-Texaco, BP, and Pilot-Flying J which generally have higher pump limits than Visa and Mastercard.

Thresholds are set at the merchant level not the card level.

And heaven forbid you swipe your card more than once and your credit card company flags your account and suspends it. Happened to me 2x despite telling them I was traveling. But the limits are set to mitigate the risk of fraud. Since there is no way of knowing how much the transaction will be when you first swipe it sets a threshold. It would keep someone who stole your card from getting away with more than $75.It protects the bank and merchant more than it protects you.

  • I filled up at Flying J/Pilot by swiping my Frequent Fueler Advantage card and have hit limits of $450. I guess it depends on the station but at the Flying J/Pilot stations that I have stopped at, the limits are posted on the pump, and they were high. Do you use your Frequent Fueler card?
