They are a wonderful asset to help heat the interior and also have the comforting view of the fire.
However in more extreme cold I'd not depend on it too much because they will heat up the living space nicely but do nothing to help warm the utility bay. So, be sure the furnace runs enough to keep that bay above freezing. I'm always telling folks...have a remote temp sensor in that bay so you know how cool it is so the furnace can be adjusted to run as much as needed.
