I'd give it a shot but wouldn't plan on a cross country for at least a few months maybe even wait until next year. Keep the initial trips a bit closer to home and figure out what needs attention. The power train is pretty simple as compared to the current generation of computerized fuel injection engines but it you run into a problem and need assistance you'll need a mechanic that is a couple of years short of retirement that knows what a carburetor is and where the points are located.
