The first time I ever took my kids to Disney we drove the 2400 mile round trip in a 35 year old car. Mechanically sound is mechanically sound. Go through the drivetrain and make sure its solid. Good compression, good oil pressure, new belts, hoses and thermostat and so on. Change all filters and fluids and tires. Then drive it 20 miles round trip. How did it go? If the answer is good drive it 100 miles. How did that go? If good, drive it some more. Take it to the mall, to the store, to go grocery shopping. Use it like a car for a while and make sure its reliable. If it is you are well on your way.
