FLEETWOOD OR DAMON?

I am looking at a few different used model motorhomes with 2 chassis options. The first is a Damon 3276, Fleetwood Fiesta 34N or a shorter version in both 31g or similar. These all have the bunkhouse option.

Is Fleetwood higher quality than a Damon?

Workhorse or Ford Chassis?

We like the layout of the 35' but would the shorter one handle better on either chassis? I have read posts of people doing all kinds of handling modifications which is a route I would rather not go.

Any other gas models with bunkhouse that anyone knows about let me know.

I would say with those 2 models you'd be splitting hairs with respect to quality or materials. Buy the one you like.
  • We currently own a 2004 Damon Intruder. Overall, we have been happy with one exception of a leak around the passenger side (navigator) window. We just recently committed to buying a 2006 Fleetwood Pace Arrow so we will find out the differences!

I will say that Thor Motorcoach (they now own Damon) has always been helpful when I had questions.

My Damon is on a Workhorse W22 chassis with the GM 8.1 V8 and Allison Transmission. We went with the newer Fleetwood Pace Arrow for various reasons and most are upgrades from the Damon we have now. The Fleetwood is on the Workhorse W24 chassis along with the wonderful GM 81. V8 and Allison tranny (like our Damon). One big difference for me is the Fleetwood has the 'Grade Brake' which was not available in 2004. Also the Fleetwood is full body paint as opposed to gelcoat fiberglass with decals. I have significant cracking and peeling of decals. I am hoping the full body paint will be easier to maintain.

Other features for our new Fleetwood is an electric awning wrapped in Aluminum when not deployed where our Damon is manual with no other protection. The bed in the master is a full queen in the Fleetwood as opposed to the short queen in the Damon. Three slide sin the Fleetwood as opposed to the Damon.

Of course I can comment further on the quality after delivery of our (new to us) Fleetwood but my impression is the quality is a step up from our Damon.
  • I have owned both. I would take the Damon over the other if all else is equal.

Fleetwood is hand above any Damon. They are build with higher quality material, better parts availability and way better quality control. Our first one was a 91 Southwind that we had for almost 15 years and we're a Bounder now on a Workhorse now for over 3 years. I'm more impressed with the Chevy 8.1 with the Allison transmission.
Damon has had a problem with a lot of windshields popping out from over size cut openings to bad installation and a lot of delamination on older models.

Opinions vary, I do not agree with your assessment. Have owned both and had many problems with the old Bounder. But would buy another Challenger in a heartbeat...

  • Damon has worked out well for us. I owned a Fleetwood towable in the past and it was good too.

We looked at many brands when we bought our current rig but for us the Damon had the better floor plan and was in very good condition and yes it is fully usable and functional with the slides in. The best deal for our money at the time.

If you are looking MHs more than 5 years old I would be more concerned with condition and floorplan of the specific unit than brand name.

When buying used the rule of thumb is always "pick the one in the better condition"

Pride of ownership and regular maintenance by the previous owner make for a dependable used coach.
  • Damon has always represented a great value for their customers. I would buy another without hesitation. We have had little to complain about for our current Damon Challenger.
  • on the DAmon can you get into the bathroom with the slide in? my 34 footer was similar to that fleetwood and was a very liveable floor plan. I think I would prefer the fleetwood myself.

  • Generally speaking a coach on a longer wheelbase coach will handle somewhat better than one on a shorter wheelbase.

If you will be spending quite a bit of time living in your coach, I would recommend a longer coach.

We spend 3-5 months a year in ours so we bought a 38' coach and enjoy the extra living space.

Good luck with your choice and safe travels.... :)
