Real wood is going to be more water resistant than pressed wood. The biggest problems are some of the laminate flooring on pressed wood backing. Some stuff looks like pressed wood, but is really plastic with wood filler, which is just fine. Pergo was pressed wood, which will buckle when wet. Real Cherry is a pretty tight grained wood, so it would likely be pretty water resistant anyway.
