I'd use a piece of plywood with carpet attached to it. something sized to fit behind a seat or store somewhere easily
For our Lili I had an inverted "milk crate" with plywood and carpet on it which she used for a step.
and when it wasn;t a step we'd flip it over and store or carry stuff in it.
