I don't know why you think the Promaster is going to cost that much less than the Transit. Ford will be very competitive with their fleet prices, It's very expensive to build on two different chassis, and I just don't think the Promaster will be the chosen chassis.
I guess we will just have to wait and see.
I think it will because people will have an expectation that it be a "value" offering. So everything that goes with it will be less. Travato is that way - certainly not high end woodwork inside. Pretty much all Dometic appliances. Definately a total "budget" offering.
I just don't see a budget class offering being on the Ford. People will pay more for the Ford based on reputation alone - especially if you get the turbo engine with bigger numbers than the RAM. So more premium fittings will need to go with that and make an overall more expensive offering. It would look more "economy" compared to the MB though. I suppose you could create a budget class on the Ford - maybe the shorter van without dual rear wheels and the standard V6. But would you, as a manufacturer, do this? I'm not sure.
I'd agree offering multiple platforms adds expense. You'll probably see the manufacturers line up behind one brand or the other. If you are going to carry two, then probably Ford/Sprinter since they are so similar in dimension.
