European Transits are front wheel drive.
Hmmmm.
OK, let's muddy the waters a bit.
In the US, Ford offers three "variations". They are the "Transit Connect" (which is, indeed, FWD), the "Transit Wagon" and the "Transit Van" (both of which are RWD in the US). IMHO, RV upfitters would use only the "Transit Van", and probably in the DRW variation.
In Europe (UK specifically), there are - interestingly - four variations of a "Transit". They are the "Transit Custom", the "Transit Courier", the "Transit Connect" (all of which are FWD only), and the "Transit" which is available with FWD, RWD or AWD (depending on engines, size and options). Their "Transit" is similar to the US "Transit"
I think the OP was referring to a US "Transit", but, it seems, stan909 is also correct.
So, now, let the salivating begin for a US "Transit" with high roof, long wheelbase and long body, diesel, DRW AND 4x4. I don't think the 4x4 is offered in the US yet, but if the UK is any indicator, it well may be 'fore long.
OK, 'nuff mud.
Cheers.
