Fresh Water Pump problem

I have a 2015 Thor Hurricane 32N with a fresh water system problem. The fresh water tank was drained, then we went on a trip, hooked up the city water system and the fresh water tank filled and was overflowing. I believe this is caused by a faulty fresh water pump and/or check valve. Is this a repair item I can handle? I'm a moderately good DIYer.

Also, is there a way to increase the water pressure in the shower? It is so low my wife has a problem rinsing her hair. There is a regulator on the hose coming into the unit.

  • The shower head on our 2015 Hurricane 32n also trickled. Removed the shower head from the hose and discovered a flow restrictor with 3 really tiny holes. After pulling that out with needlenose pliers, the shower is much better, though still not like home.
  • If you have a 'water panel' with switches/valves........check that you don't have the 'fill' one Open.

If you don't have that set up then water pump internal check valve is leaking thru allowing city water to backflow thru pump.
Turn city water OFF and run pump.....this will sometimes clean and debris out of pump and allow check valve to reset/close.
After using water in fresh water tank shut off pump and go back on city water if you want.
If fresh water tank refills then you can rebuild pump OR just buy a $10 in-line check valve and install it in pump suction line

City water and regulator.......how much pressure is regulator supplying?
Many showers have flow restrictors in them.......disconnect hose from faucet and check for reducer. Check other end of hose at handle or even in handle. Remove it or drill it out to enlarge flow.

The common setup for a fill valve is that it bypasses the pump and T's into the suction line that goes to the pump from the tank. The check valve in the pump keeps the city water from backfeeding through the pump. When it works right...
  • 1. If your fresh water tank if filling while hooked up to the spigot, it's usually caused by the knife valve getting bumped while moving stuff in that compartment. Mine is in the bay with the electrical cord and I've bumped it partially open on occasion. Find that valve and make sure it's closed.

    2. A few things will give you better "pressure" in the shower. One is the small hose screens used to keep debris out of your system. You'll find them in the end of your water hose, at the connection where the hose attaches to your rig and in the ends of the faucets and shower head. Since yours is a 2015, I would suspect all of those screens are clean so file this away for future reference. That said, your system is designed to "save" water so your shower hose/head will have a small disk or washer inside the hose or head to restrict the flow of water. Remove the hose and the head and remove any/all washers/restrictors and reassemble. Then check your water flow. If it improves, you're a hero in your wife's eyes. You can also purchase a Oxygenics shower head. While it does not offer extra water flow, it mixes air with the water to give you the feeling you have extra pressure. Finally, remove the water pressure regulator and see if your flow increases. If it does, you might want to change out the regulator if it's not adjustable. If it's adjustable, increase the pressure to 55-60 psi. If your regulator does not have a gauge built in, you can buy one at Home Depot for less than $10.....Dennis
  • My 2014 Keystone Alpine 5ver had that same problem several weeks ago. It has a selector valve that switches from "city" to "tank" to "normal". My freshwater tank was 1/3 full and when hooked to CG on "city" we had water puddle outside and tank was full the next morning. I rotated the switch clockwise twice and drained the tank. No problems for the next 4 days before we went home. Think selector valve was leaking from city to tank.

  • You may be able to disassemble the pump head and clean any debris out of the check valve. SHURflo pumps come apart pretty easily, but I don't know about other brands.

A water pressure regulator can reduce a higher pressure, but cannot boost a low pressure of course. Does the pressure at the shower increase when the onboard pump is turned on? We've been at a number of parks over the years where we routinely turned on the pump and drew from the onboard tank to get the maximum pressure from the shower. There's no need to turn off the city water when doing so.
  • Take the head off the shower to see if that solves the problem.
