Fresh water

Hi Everyone.....

When you are "on the road" what is the best way to get fresh water for the tank? Thanks

  • In CG's with only dispersed water faucets (each camping site deosn't have water) I just pull alongside the faucet and attach a hose to the faucet and fill my tank if we're going to be in the CG for a few days. This works really well in USFS and NPS CG's. If you can't hook a hose to the faucet or the CG has the old fashioned pump, then I just use a bucket and fill our RV using a funnel one bucket at a time. Takes awhile but it works!
  • First off what is IMHO? I mostly want to know "where" to fill up. So, I guess it is campgrounds, RV Parks or gas stations. Thank you all
  • IMHO the amount of water you carry can depend on where you are.In heavily populated area that are more temperate you could get by with a small amount of water. In extreme heat areas and less populated areas where towns can be over 60 miles apart and limited cell phone coverage you need maximum amount of water. Again IMHO a full load of water is not going to effect mileage to any great degree and short of floods excess water will not kill you but not enough can and has.
As far a filling I fill at campgrounds but I fill through a charcoal filter and always taste the water before filling.

Hi, IMHO unless you are dry camping, hualing a ton of fresh water around is very wasteful! Water weighs a lot, about 7.5 lbs. per gallon. Here is what I do, from home, put between 5 -7 gallons, to flush the toilet and wash hands on the way to where you are going. At the various stops along the way, campsites etc, check to see if you need to add. For drinking? Bottled water works great, you can use it for cooking etc also, a good cup of coffee or tea starts with good water, you can purchase bottled water almost anywhere. You can go a long way on the 5-7 gallons if you watch your use!
This is exactly what we do. Never haul more water than is needed. DW uses it often to flush while on the road. Always have 3 or 4 gallon jugs of water under dining table for coffee, tea, etc. HAPPY TRAVELS.
  • Most service stations will aliow you to fill with fresh water, some charge a small fee. The same holds true at most RV parks and campgrounds.
There are several websites that list places that have freshwater and dump stations.

  • I keep mine about 1/3 full which is about 10 gallons. While on the road we will put in what we need for a couple of days. We learned to taste the water because some of the places the water was terrible.
