So, the OP most likely had to use a dogbone to convert from his 50a plug to a 30a. Then that must mean that one leg of the 30a socket was wired for 240. Is that *ever* done in a home outlet, for any reason?
That is IMPOSSIBLE in a residential situation. One "leg" is only 120 volts. He wired the neutral lug to another leg of 120--thus, 240 volts. The only time when one "leg" is at that voltage is in an industrial/commercial setting when the service is 3 phase with a wild leg (it typically runs between 220-260 VAC). A 480 V, 3 phase has a voltage of 277 to ground on each leg. None of that applies here.
