Hi Jer,
I am really happy for you that you took the plunge and bought that rig. We looked at the Thor at a dealer here in the St Louis area and liked it but had some concerns about it.We weren't excited about the cab, as you were as well. Couldn't get it in a Lariat. I was very concerned about the refrigerator. I was very impressed with the chassis and drivetrain/tow capacity however, we really wanted and need 4 wheel drive. We also looked at the Nexus Super C. They were easy to work with and would have built us a unit on a 4x4 chassis. They were very liberal with a custom build. However. It all came down to budget. We found an excellent used Host 300 for sale. It was 5 states away from us but I drove out to look at it and test drive it. The original owner took pictures of everything I asked him too and held the rig for me without a down payment until I got there. That was 2 weeks. When i showed up, they were very gracious and helpfull. They had all of the original paperwork and a full binder with all the owners manuals. I was so impressed i gave him his asking price. I actually told him I was not going to try to negotiate the price down. I gave him a check for earnest money and 4 weeks later after all inspections and paperwork was complete, my wife and I bought 2 one way airplane tickets. They picked us up at a train station, took us to their house, handed us the keys and 70 gallons of diesel fuel and we have never looked back.
I have since replaced the original charger/inverter with a Xantrex 3000 watt charger/inverter, bought new tires, new cold air intake from AF&E, will be installing an exhaust brake, the 6.4 did not come with one, updated the stereo speakers throughout the rig, and will have a local shop put a custom tune in it, then test her out on his dyno. We are excited as hell for the spring thaw and to get some more miles on her.
Last summer I towed the 87 Wrangler both ways over Cottonwood Pass outside of Buena Vista Colorado. I would never take that route in a gas rig. Our 6.4 did just fine.
