regarding the tuning subject. As I said earlier inthis post, I bought the AF&E cold air intake and filter charger for the 6.4. It is currently still in the box in my shop since I am still waiting to retrieve my rig from the repair facility.
2nd, I am exploring 2 options with regard to programming. If I go mass market, I will buy and install the Spartan Phalanx
http://www.spartandieseltech.com
Spartan specializes in Ford Diesel and has a strong reputation for creating the strongest programs in the market for Ford. Upside is,(many things) if you go to the dealer for a warranty issue, they will typically not do anything about it IF your warranty issue has nothing to do with the engine or ECM, not true in every case but a judgement call, if you are concerned about, simply de-tune the ECM before you take the rig in for repair, once you leave, re-tune with your saved program, not too difficult, reprogramming will provide mo HP and better economy in many situations, give stronger performance in the mountains, better sharper shift points, better towing, more responsiveness. The Phalanx has about 26 tunes in it so you can do whatever you want.
Downside is the Spartan is pricy. What is your level of pain?
If I go true custom, I have a local shop that specializes in high end classic car restoration and modifying race cars and diesel trucks. They have a dynometer in shop for testing purposes and the owner is cutting edge when it comes to technical and tuning knowledge. He will install a program in my rig for about 1/4th the money but he will own the tune and the programmer so if I ever need to make changes I go back to him and pay shop time again. His shop is addictive because of some of the incredible cars they pass through there. They had 2 original, aluminum body Cobra's there at one time doing resto's. Amazing stuff if you like the classics and speed.
Jerry, I send you a PM the other day.
