Fuel Filter Onan *HDKAK-J

Looking for advise on changing the fuel filter on an Onan 8HDKAK J series generator. I have allway had it changed when I had the generator serviced, but I would like to try it my self, any sugestions?
  • As the other responses have said you do have to be quick to avoid a loss of diesel. The filter itself is a common part. Use the following PN for cross reference.
    Fram P3500
  • I have changed mine and do as Fireup describes and you won't have any problems. I buy my filters from filter barn. They carry Fleetguard filters and others if you wish.
  • Guess the engineers figured it would be a good time to clean all your wrenches after you use them all....
  • When you are taking the fittings off or tightening them on make sure you use two wrenches, one to hold the fitting in the filter and one to turn the line fitting nut. I just changed my 7.5 filter and I needed a 3/4 inch, a 5/8 inch for the line from the fuel pump, a 9/16 and a 7/16 for the line from the filter to the engine. And a 1/2 inch for the filter mount nut on the stud in the centre of the filter. And you will have fuel down your sleeve if you are laying under the coach, also use a small drip pan. For a small item I am not sure why they had to design it with 5 different size wrenches to change it.
    Happy changing, Bob
  • You can get that filter, and all your Onan filters, at O'Reilly's. They will be Wix filters. And yes, unless you are better than good, you will most likely get a bit of diesel fuel in your armpit ;)
  • Thanks "FIRE UP" for your advise,I have the same box-like fuel filter
    on my Onan Gen. HDKAK...,8kW.

  • Feeline,
You don't say what the exact generator you have is. I'm assuming, from those model letters, it's an Onan, either 7.5 QD or, an 8QD, quiet diesel generator. I really can't speak for the 8K unit but, I've got some time on our 7.5QD. I've had it about 2/3 of the way torn down for various repairs and replacement of parts. But, as for your changing the fuel filter on yours, if it's anything like ours, it's a piece of cake.

If you haven't seen one, the filter is a rectangular piece, about 3"x4"x 6" or there abouts. It takes a coupleof wrenches to loosen the fuel lines to it and, if I recall, there's a bracket that holds the whole thing in place. It's been a while so, I might be off a bit here but, not too far.

Access to it, is from under the generator itself. There's a door, towards the drivers side that must be removed in order to gain access to that filter. You'll see what it takes to get that door out of the way. A hint here, if you take on this little project, have some rags ready. There's good possibility that you'll have some diesel running down your arm. Not much but, it's nusence.

And, once the old filter is out, and you start to install the new one, do not tighten either of the lines until both are well threaded into their fittings. Then you tighten them and then, lock it all back into the bracket.

Then, start the gen up and check for leaks. Once no leaks are detected, then you can put the door back on the bottom.
