Fueling a gasser...

I tired the search but didn't come up with what I was looking for. Do any of you have issues when fueling your coaches with fuel? I have an '00 Suncruiser with the v10 and it takes forever to fill the tank with gas. If I'm at 1/4 tank it'll fill like normal up to about 3/4 tank and then it's a good 10 minutes to get the tank the rest of the way full. I literally have to keep clicking the nozzle handle as it doesn't want to take fuel. I'm assuming it's some sort of pressure/venting issue with the tank but I was more or less wondering if this is something common? The 1st couple of times out with the coach after we bought it I was only filling it 3/4 full and thought I had a fuel sending unit issue. After doing some mileage tests I realized we were never getting it full!

When I had a 1999 F53, I had similar problems. I found that if I raised the rear of the coach by deploying the jacks, it would fill much better.
  • Check for a loop or a sag in the fuel tank vent. It traps liquid fuel and acts like a p-trap. If you notice fuel backing up the filler spout, this is most likely the issue. Could also be mud daubers in the vent.
  • X2 on the vent hose either sagging or being somehow plugged. I had a Damon that did the same thing.. I found that I could lay next to the RV and raise the vent hose to get the fuel out of the hose and it would fill properly. If I tried to "top off" the tank the vent hose got flooded and I would have to do it again. The answer to the problem was to stop filling the first time the pump clicked off. I worked for me.

THe problem is that the motor home is wider so the fuel filler tube has very little "Slope" I used to drop Filler side jacks. Alas just now they are not working but I do plan to fix that Some day..
  • Air must come out to make room for more gas. The vent tube is the culprit here. Make sure it slops upward from the tank to the filler.
